Dear Wild Finca Community,Welcome! We’re Katie and Luke, partners in life and in rewilding, nature-loving storytellers turned small-scale ecosystem restorers. Once globe-trotting wildlife journalists, we now spend our days raising our two wildlings (Roan and Albus) and breathing life back into a once-defunct dairy farm nestled in the green mountains of Northern Spain. Our journey began back in 2014, in the Zambian bush, where a shared passion for wildlife and conservation set us on the path we’re still walking today. Over the next five years, we travelled the globe, documenting tales of resilience and fragility in the natural world. From peregrine falcons in Chicago to otters in Singapore, hyenas in Harar to the comeback of the Iberian Lynx in Spain, we saw nature's capacity for rebirth, but also its desperate need for protection. Not all stories made it to print. Many were too grim, too heavy - children scavenging in toxic landfills, species on the brink, landscapes collapsing. We were burning out. And so, in 2018, we stepped back from storytelling and began the slower, deeper work of restoration, of land, of spirit, and of hope. That shift brought us here, to Wild Finca. The moment we arrived, something in us changed. There was a deep exhale, a sense of this is where we’re meant to be. We fell in love with this land, and she began to heal us as we worked to heal her. Today, Wild Finca is a small but thriving sanctuary. What was once overgrazed monoculture grass pasture has been transformed into a rich mosaic of wildflower meadows, forest edges, ponds, and wildlife corridors. So far, we’ve recorded 113 bird species (including our most exciting recent visitor, a locally breeding Eagle Owl!), over 30 mammal species (16 of them bats!), and an explosion of invertebrate life that would make any entomologist swoon. It’s all been guided by a mix of “sponge-learning,” instinct, and the land herself. Inspired first by the Knepp Estate and then more deeply by Rebecca Hosking’s work, we came to understand that humans aren’t meant to stand apart from nature, we are part of the ecosystem. And when we choose to take up that role with care and humility, we become a keystone species for good. As Rebecca so powerfully puts it: "Of all the species on this planet, [humans] have demonstrated the ability to profoundly change ecosystems... The key is realising we have a choice." That choice, to step into a new story, has become the heart of Wild Finca. So, who are we today? 🌿 We are small-scale rewilders: showing that you don’t need thousands of acres or a big budget to make meaningful change. Dear Reader,We have something special to share with you this week. Last spring our lovely friends Penny and Dave Green visited us here at Wild Finca. You may remember the newsletter afterwards - full of moth trapping, bio-blitzing, and all sorts of other magical nature activities. While they were here, Penny also recorded a conversation with us for her wonderful podcast The Wandering Ecologist. Listening back feels like stepping straight into an Asturian spring day - birds calling, pond...
Dear Reader,Happy New Year! January arrived with a soft scattering of snow - just a light dusting across the land here, but more generously across the Sueve mountains opposite, which have been looking especially beautiful in the winter light. Photo taken after the snow had all but disappeared! And on our walk back from our neighbours after Three Kings Day, we were lucky enough to spot our first Woodcock of the season. It came shooting low across the sky and disappeared into the orchard above...
Dear , Before anything else, we wanted to say a huge thank you. For your messages. For your encouragement. For the wonderful photos you’ve sent of yourselves holding No Paradise with Wolves after receiving it for Christmas. Seeing the book out in the world - in your homes, in your hands, beside cups of tea and glasses of wine - is wonderfully surreal. And to everyone who has taken the time to leave reviews on Goodreads and Amazon so far, we truly can’t thank you enough. As part of this...
